Breathe In. Breathe Out. Meditate.

I know, I know... If you don't already meditate then you aren't into it. Here is the deal - it is one of those things that you aren't into until you try it! I don't mean try sitting there and meditating with no guidance and saying it doesn't work. I mean going to a guided meditation, or downloading one of the many helpful meditation apps and trying it. If you don't know what you should be doing during meditation than of course you aren't going to benefit from it because you'll likely be wondering the whole time if you are doing it right! I'm not going to sit here today and explain meditation because I haven't studied it (yet!). What I am going to do is tell you that it changed my life.

After moving to San Francisco I struggled with severe depression and anxiety. It got so bad that I wouldn't even leave the house unless I was going to work. I never really believed in meditation, but my best friend thought it would be a good idea for me to go so she actually flew from TX to SF to take me to meditation (best friend award goes to...). I'm not going to lie - it was hard! I saw what was going on in my subconscious all day every day and it was scary. I cried... a lot! But it helped me to see why I had so much anxiety and how I could just note thoughts and not go down the rabbit hole with them. A meditator was born! I continued to practice (with the help from an app) on my own every morning and my anxiety continued to lessen day after day. I now use it as a tool when I feel anxiety coming on at any point during the day and try to continue my morning practice daily.

I urge you to not pass judgment on meditation, but to simply try it. You can google so many stories of people who use meditation as a tool in their stressful lives. There is also so much research that has been done and is being done about the other benefits of meditation. I have listed a few below, but I urge you to research the other benefits too - there are so many!

  • It lowers stress - who doesn't want that in our stressful society?

  • It helps with mental illness

  • It helps us process emotions - you don't want to leave those bad boys unprocessed

  • It is linked to lower yearly doctor costs - less doctor visits because mind-body connection is a powerful thing!

  • Lowers depression risk for everyone, teens and pregnant women included

  • It helps you sleep better

Still don't think it's for you? I'm going to go there and do a quote - "Don't knock it till you've tried it." What can it hurt? Find a guided meditation near you and sign up for it! Most meditation classes are donation based, so it won't even cost you much to go. Out of excuses yet? Good!
